Why You Need a Medical Marijuana Card
In Kentucky, only registered medical marijuana patients are legally allowed to purchase products from dispensaries, once they open. This makes obtaining your card the first step to accessing safe, tested, and regulated marijuana.
Getting your card is simple! Here’s how it works:
Schedule an evaluation – Meet with a licensed medical provider through Kentucky Marijuana Card for an evaluation to confirm that you qualify under Kentucky’s approved qualifying conditions.
Receive your certification – Once the nurse practitioner confirms your eligibility, you will receive your medical marijuana recommendation.
Submit your state application – If you qualify, during your appointment, we will guide you through completing your application to the state.
It’s important to start now because the state typically takes about 30 days to review and approve applications. By beginning the process today, you can ensure that your card will be ready once dispensaries open, so you won’t have to wait to access products.
Kentucky’s Marijuana Is Locally Grown and Locally Produced
Kentucky designed its medical marijuana program with a strong focus on quality and local oversight. Instead of bringing in products from other states, every item available to patients is produced start to finish here in Kentucky. Products sold at dispensaries must be:
Grown in Kentucky
Processed in Kentucky
Tested in Kentucky
This supports local agriculture and ensures high-quality standards. The full production cycle must be completed before dispensaries can begin stocking their shelves.
Understanding the Production Timeline
Marijuana cultivation takes time, and each stage is necessary to produce safe, consistent products. Kentucky growers are currently finishing the cultivation and harvest of the first legal marijuana crops. Most plants have reached full maturity, and harvests are either underway or recently completed.
Growth and Cultivation
Marijuana plants grown from seed or clone typically take 12 to 16 weeks to fully mature.
Drying and Curing
Once harvested, flower must be dried and cured. This step adds at least three to four weeks to the timeline, sometimes more, depending on processing requirements.
Processing and Manufacturing
After curing, processors begin developing a range of medical marijuana products, including:
Flower that is trimmed, cured, and packaged
Edibles made with infused oils and tested for accurate dosing
Vape cartridges filled with distillate or live resin
Tinctures formulated for consistent, measurable use
Topical products designed for targeted relief
All products undergo thorough testing to ensure they meet Kentucky’s quality and safety standards before reaching patients. As this is the state’s first round of legal production, processors are actively building inventory and preparing a variety of products for launch.
Most of the first crops have been harvested and are now in the drying and curing phase, while some are already moving into processing to become finished products like flower, edibles, tinctures, vapes, and topicals. Early dispensaries may begin with a smaller selection, but menus will grow quickly as additional batches complete testing and move through the system. Patients can expect more options and greater availability each week as Kentucky’s medical marijuana market continues to expand.
The Wait Is Almost Over!
Kentucky’s first medical marijuana dispensaries are finally preparing to open, and patients will soon have access to locally grown, tested products across the state. After months of cultivation and processing, the system is now entering its final stages.
With dispensaries opening soon, now is an important time for patients to make sure they are ready. The state takes about 30 days to review and approve medical marijuana card applications, so getting your card now ensures you will be able to visit dispensaries as soon as doors open.
