Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive condition that affects memory, thinking, and daily activities. As the disease advances, many patients experience additional symptoms that impact their quality of life, including anxiety, agitation, sleep issues, and changes in mood or behavior.

Although Alzheimer’s disease is not a qualifying condition under Kentucky’s medical marijuana program, some patients living with Alzheimer’s still qualify for a medical marijuana card if they have another qualifying condition. A licensed medical marijuana practitioner reviews each patient’s symptoms, medical history, and overall health to determine eligibility.

Can Medical Marijuana Help With Alzheimer’s Symptoms?

Research on medical marijuana and Alzheimer’s disease continues to grow, with studies exploring how THC and CBD can help manage certain symptoms associated with dementia.

Agitation is one of the most common behavioral symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease. It can include restlessness, irritability, aggression, confusion, or emotional distress. These symptoms can be difficult for both patients and caregivers to manage, especially as Alzheimer’s progresses.

A recent study examined the effects of THC and CBD products in patients with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia who were experiencing agitation.

Researchers found that most participants experienced improvements in agitation symptoms after using marijuana-based therapies.

Researchers are also studying medical marijuana for its potential to help manage symptoms that many people with Alzheimer's disease experience, including:

  • Agitation

  • Anxiety

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Changes in mood

  • Reduced appetite

Medical marijuana does not cure Alzheimer’s disease or stop its progression. Instead, it can be used as part of a patient’s overall care plan to help manage certain symptoms and improve comfort under the guidance of a qualified marijuana practitioner.

Can Alzheimer’s Patients Qualify for Medical Marijuana in Kentucky?

Alzheimer’s disease itself is not listed as a qualifying condition in Kentucky. However, patients living with Alzheimer’s can still qualify for medical marijuana if they have another condition approved under Kentucky’s medical marijuana program.

For example, if a patient with Alzheimer’s also has severe arthritis or glaucoma, both qualifying conditions in Kentucky, they can schedule an evaluation with one of our licensed medical marijuana practitioners to discuss medical marijuana as a treatment option and begin the certification process.

During your evaluation, our practitioners review your medical history, qualifying condition, and treatment goals to determine whether medical marijuana is an appropriate option for your care. If you qualify, we will issue your medical certification and guide you through the next steps of registering with the state.

How Kentucky Patients Get a Medical Marijuana Card

Because recreational marijuana is not legal in Kentucky, patients must receive a medical marijuana certification and complete the state's registration process before they can legally purchase medical marijuana from a licensed dispensary.

The first step is scheduling an appointment with a certified medical marijuana practitioner - that’s where we come in! During your evaluation, your practitioner reviews your symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals to better understand your needs and answer any questions you have.

If you already have a qualifying condition, our team can help you move forward with your evaluation. If you have a diagnosis but need help locating your medical records, our team can assist you with requesting the necessary documentation. For patients who do not have documentation of a qualifying condition, a separate Diagnosis Consultation may be appropriate. During this consultation, our practitioner evaluates your symptoms and medical history to determine whether you have a qualifying condition. Diagnosis Consultations require an additional $39 consultation fee and do not guarantee approval for the medical marijuana program.

If approved, you will receive a medical marijuana certification, and our team will help you complete and submit your state application during your appointment. We guide you through each step of the registration process to make sure your application is completed correctly. After submission, the state can take up to 30 days to review and approve your application. Once approved, you will receive your official Kentucky medical marijuana card via email and can use it to visit licensed dispensaries.

Patients must bring their medical marijuana card, printed or digitally, and a valid photo ID when visiting licensed Kentucky dispensaries. Dispensaries use this information to verify active registration before patients can purchase medical marijuana products.

At Kentucky Marijuana Card, we provide convenient evaluations and patient support to help eligible residents understand their options within Kentucky’s medical marijuana program. Our team guides you through every step of the process, from completing your evaluation to submitting your application to the state.

We are here to answer questions, provide support, and help make the process of becoming a registered medical marijuana patient in Kentucky as simple as possible.

New patients must complete their initial medical marijuana evaluation in person at one of our Kentucky office locations or at one of our daily patient drives held across the state. These appointments allow our practitioners to meet with you, review your medical history, and complete your evaluation in accordance with Kentucky’s program requirements.

We also offer telemedicine renewal appointments for our existing patients, allowing them to complete their renewal visit remotely from the comfort of their home. This makes the renewal process more convenient while still ensuring patients receive the continued support they need to remain active in Kentucky’s medical marijuana program.
