Kentucky’s medical marijuana program has finally moved forward, and 2026 is shaping up to be a big year for patients. Licensed dispensaries are now open across the state, giving cardholders legal access to marijuana products. This spring, several new dispensaries are set to welcome patients in Western Kentucky and beyond.

How the Rollout Works
Kentucky’s marijuana program is rolling out in phases to ensure products are safe, regulated, and available for patients. Dispensaries are currently offering marijuana flower and edible gummies, but as licensed cultivators and processors continue growing and producing more inventory, additional marijuana products will become available at dispensaries across the state.
You Must Have an Active Medical Marijuana Card
Before visiting any Kentucky dispensary, you must have an active Kentucky medical marijuana card. Dispensaries cannot sell marijuana to anyone without an approved state registration.
Here’s what getting an active card involves:
1. Schedule an appointment with a licensed physician. You must meet with a state-authorized medical marijuana provider who will review your medical history and confirm that you have a qualifying condition under Kentucky law - that's where we come in!
2. Receive a written certification. If approved, the physician will issue a certification stating that you qualify for medical marijuana treatment.
3. Complete your state application. After receiving your certification, you submit an application through the Kentucky medical marijuana program. This includes uploading your certification, providing identification, and paying the required state fee. At Kentucky Marijuana Card, we guide patients step-by-step through this process to make sure their application is completed correctly and efficiently. It normally takes about 30 days for the state to review and approve your application. Once approved, you will receive your official medical marijuana card.
Only after completing all three steps will your card be considered active, allowing you to legally purchase marijuana from a dispensary.
Renewals
Medical marijuana cards must be renewed to remain active. Patients need to:
Obtain a new physician certification
Submit a renewal application to the state before the card expires
At Kentucky Marijuana Card, we notify patients ahead of time and can assist with renewals, so you don’t have to worry about letting your card expire. If you are a previous patient of ours, we provide telemedicine renewal appointments so you can renew your card from the comfort of your home!
