Big changes are coming to Kentucky’s medical marijuana program, and patients across the state are one step closer to legally accessing medical marijuana through licensed dispensaries. With cultivation and processing now underway and dispensary licenses finalized, the state is on track to have products available very soon. Here’s what you need to know about where the program stands and what’s next.
Cultivation Set to Begin Soon
Governor Andy Beshear recently announced that growers are about to begin planting their first medical marijuana crops, signaling a major milestone in the rollout of the program.
Kentucky’s first cultivation facility broke ground earlier this year in Monticello, a $25 million project that will bring dozens of jobs to the area and supply much of the initial product for the state’s dispensaries. With planting starting soon and processing equipment already being set up, cultivators and processors are working toward having products ready for dispensary shelves by this fall.
Over 10,000 Patients Already Registered
Since Kentucky’s medical marijuana program officially launched in January, more than 10,000 patients have already registered with the state and received their medical cards. To further support patients, the governor recently waived the state renewal fee for anyone who registers in 2025, meaning that those who pay the state fee for their card this year will not need to pay again next year. This is great news for current cardholders and another reason to get your card now if you haven’t yet applied.
Dispensaries Are Taking Shape
Dispensary licenses have been awarded and are now going through their final county-level approvals. Site inspections and final checks are expected to wrap up over the summer, with dispensaries opening shortly after. Once open, patients with a valid medical marijuana card will be able to purchase up to eight ounces of medical marijuana per visit.
The state is working diligently to keep the rollout on schedule, with the goal of opening dispensaries and serving patients before the end of the fall.

f Kentucky were truly committed to caring for patients, it would prioritize importing medical-grade cannabis from states that already produce and distribute it effectively, ensuring immediate access for those in need. The lack of urgency in addressing patients’ needs leads me to believe this initiative is less about compassion and more about creating a revenue stream for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the growers, processers & dispensores not about the patients.
