Kentucky’s medical marijuana program continues to grow as more businesses begin operating across the state. One of the latest developments is the opening of Holler Cannabis Company’s medical marijuana cultivation facility in Lexington.

Holler Cannabis Company officially opened its Lexington facility on August 21, 2026, marking another step forward for Kentucky’s growing medical marijuana industry. The company is licensed to grow medical marijuana for patients throughout the state and is one of several cultivators working to supply Kentucky’s licensed dispensaries.

Holler Cannabis Company Opens in Lexington

Holler Cannabis Company opened its cultivation facility about 20 months after receiving its state license to grow medical marijuana. The facility is located in the Lexington Manor area, although the company has not publicly disclosed its exact location because of security concerns.

The company is a Tier 1 cultivator, which means it is among the smaller cultivation operations licensed by the state. Kentucky's medical marijuana program allows licensed cultivators to grow marijuana that can eventually be processed into products and sold to registered patients through licensed dispensaries.

At the facility's opening, Holler had marijuana plants in different stages of growth. Some finished and trimmed products were also present at the facility, while plants in the flowering stage were expected to be ready for harvest soon.

The opening is important because Kentucky law requires medical marijuana production to take place within the state. This means marijuana sold through Kentucky's medical marijuana program must be grown, processed, and distributed through businesses operating under Kentucky's regulations.

Kentucky's Medical Marijuana Industry Continues to Expand

Holler Cannabis Company's opening is part of a larger expansion of Kentucky's medical marijuana industry.

According to officials cited at the facility's ribbon-cutting, 39 medical marijuana businesses were operating in Kentucky as of August 21. This included 11 cultivators, five processors, two safety compliance facilities, and 21 dispensaries. Additional cultivators and dispensaries are also expected to open as the program continues to develop.

Kentucky began licensing cultivators and processors through a lottery in October 2024. While dispensaries began serving registered patients in 2025, bringing more marijuana cultivation facilities online has taken additional time. Growing marijuana at a commercial scale requires licensed businesses to establish their facilities, grow plants, harvest them, and move products through testing and processing before they can reach dispensary shelves.

Gov. Andy Beshear attended Holler's ribbon-cutting ceremony and acknowledged that the rollout of Kentucky's medical marijuana program has been slower than originally hoped. He also emphasized the state's goal of creating a safe and highly regulated program.

What Holler's Opening Means for Kentucky Patients

For Kentucky medical marijuana patients, new cultivation facilities can help increase the supply of products available through licensed dispensaries.

More than 24,000 Kentuckians were reported to have active medical marijuana cards at the time of Holler's opening. As more patients participate in the program, having additional licensed businesses producing medical marijuana can become increasingly important.

A larger number of cultivators can also give patients more choices as different companies produce different products and strains. However, the availability of specific products can vary between dispensaries, so patients should check a dispensary's current menu or contact the dispensary before making a trip.

How to Get a Kentucky Medical Marijuana Card

As Kentucky's medical marijuana industry continues to expand, eligible patients can take steps to participate in the state's program.

The first step is meeting with a qualified marijuana practitioner for an evaluation - that’s where we come in! A marijuana practitioner can determine whether medical marijuana is appropriate based on your medical history and whether you meet Kentucky's requirements.

Once you receive the necessary certification, you must complete the state's registration process before you can legally purchase medical marijuana from a licensed Kentucky dispensary. Kentucky’s state application process can take up to 30 days to review and approve. Once your application is approved, the state will send you an email with instructions on how to access your medical marijuana card. You can access your card through Kentucky’s online medical marijuana patient portal and should have it available before visiting a dispensary.

When visiting a dispensary, you will need to bring your active medical marijuana card, digitally or printed, and a valid government-issued photo ID. Having both documents with you allows the dispensary to verify your registration and identity before you make a purchase.

At Kentucky Marijuana Card, our team helps patients through the process, including scheduling their evaluation and assisting with the state application during their appointment. Our goal is to make the process easier to understand so eligible Kentucky patients can complete each step correctly.

With more cultivators like Holler Cannabis Company opening facilities across Kentucky, the state's medical marijuana program is continuing to develop. As additional businesses begin operating and more products make their way through the regulated supply chain, Kentucky patients can expect the program to continue expanding.
