Kentucky’s medical marijuana program is officially underway, and patients across the state are gaining access to legal marijuana through licensed dispensaries. After years of waiting, dispensaries are now opening in multiple cities, giving cardholders options for relief and treatment.
A Look at Current Dispensaries
Kentucky’s medical marijuana program launched in January 2025, but it took time for dispensaries to start selling products. The early rollout was slow due to high demand and limited supply.
When the first dispensary opened in December, many registered patients quickly purchased products, and now, more dispensaries are opening, helping patients in cities across the state access the medicine they need.
To access dispensaries and purchase medical marijuana products, patients must have a valid Kentucky medical marijuana card. This card verifies that you are legally approved to buy and use medical marijuana in the state. It takes the state about 30 days to review and approve card applications, so obtaining a medical marijuana card now ensures you can take advantage of these dispensaries as soon as more products and locations become available.
The Post Dispensary – Beaver Dam
The Post Dispensary was the first dispensary to open in Kentucky. In December, it served hundreds of patients in its first days and quickly sold out of products. This dispensary’s opening marked a major milestone for Kentucky’s program, giving registered medical marijuana patients their first chance to buy legal marijuana.
The Post has since reopened on January 16th with additional stock. It currently offers marijuana flower for vaporization and plans to expand to other products like gummies and vape cartridges.
Speakeasy Dispensary – Lexington
Speakeasy Dispensary opened in Lexington on January 15th. Located in the Hamburg area, this dispensary features a unique speakeasy-style atmosphere. It currently offers marijuana flower for vaporization and will expand its product options in the future when available.
This opening was long-awaited by patients in Central Kentucky, who would have previously had to travel long distances to access medical marijuana. The Lexington dispensary provides much-needed local access for patients in the region.
Blue Sage Dispensary – Nicholasville
Blue Sage Dispensary is expected to open by the end of January 2026. Serving patients in Jessamine County and nearby areas, it will provide a convenient option for people who do not want to travel long distances for marijuana.
Upcoming Dispensary Openings
Kentucky’s rollout is still in progress, and several dispensaries are preparing to open later this year. Some notable upcoming locations include:
As more cultivation and processing facilities begin full operations, access across Kentucky will continue to improve. Cultivation facilities are where marijuana is grown, and processing facilities are where that marijuana is turned into products that can be sold at dispensaries.
As additional growers harvest marijuana and more processors prepare products for sale, dispensaries will receive more consistent shipments. This will lead to better product availability, fewer shortages, and more dispensary locations opening across the state. Over time, patients can expect easier access, shorter wait times, and a wider selection of medical marijuana products.
What Products Are Available
Raw marijuana flower is allowed for medical use; however, smoking marijuana is not permitted under state law. Patients may legally purchase raw flower and use it in approved ways, such as vaporization.
At this time, dispensaries are only selling marijuana flower as the program gets started. Edibles, oils, tinctures, capsules, and other product types are not yet available for purchase, but progress is being made. Kentucky’s first processor, which focuses on edibles and oils, has begun producing products. As distribution ramps up, these items are expected to reach dispensary shelves in the upcoming months. As additional processors begin production, patients can expect a wider variety of medical marijuana products to become available across the state.
Tips for Visiting a Dispensary
Before visiting dispensaries, there are some things patients should know:
You must have a valid Kentucky medical marijuana card to access dispensaries and purchase products
You must bring a government-issued photo ID
Feel free to ask the dispensary staff about available products and how to use them
Product availability may be limited at first as the program continues to expand
Only patients with an active Kentucky medical marijuana card are legally allowed to enter a dispensary and purchase medical marijuana products. To get a card, patients must first schedule an evaluation with a licensed medical marijuana practitioner. The practicioner will review your medical history and determine if you qualify under Kentucky’s medical marijuana program. Once approved, you submit your application to the state for review, which takes about 30 days. After the state issues your card, it becomes active, allowing you to legally purchase products from licensed dispensaries.
Our licensed practitioners help patients understand product options and advise on which types of marijuana products may best fit different conditions, symptoms, and treatment needs before ever visiting a dispensary.
Looking Ahead
Kentucky’s dispensary program is expanding quickly. Patients are now able to buy marijuana, and more dispensary openings are coming throughout the year. From Beaver Dam to Lexington, Nicholasville, and beyond, access is improving for patients in every region.
It takes the state about 30 days to review and approve marijuana card applications, so obtaining a medical marijuana card now ensures you can take advantage of these dispensaries as more products and locations become available.
