When Will Dispensaries Open in Kentucky?

Although Kentucky’s medical marijuana program is active, the state’s law requires that all medical marijuana sold in Kentucky be grown, processed, and tested entirely within the state. This means dispensaries cannot open until cultivation facilities have completed their first harvests and products are ready for distribution.

Currently, growers are still building and outfitting their facilities, planting crops, and working through the state’s compliance and testing process. Many industry experts and state officials estimate that dispensaries could begin opening this fall.

The state has built an entirely new supply chain from scratch. This includes growing and harvesting marijuana plants, processing them into usable products, testing for safety and quality, and finally distributing them to licensed dispensaries. 

Where Will Dispensaries Be Located?

The Kentucky Medical Cannabis Program has awarded 48 dispensary licenses distributed across 11 regions of the state. Each county will have at least one dispensary license awarded, with two additional dispensaries planned for both Louisville and Lexington due to their larger populations.

So far, there have been a few dispensary addresses that license holders have announced. Additional details are emerging as more facilities finalize their locations and construction.
