Kentucky medical marijuana patients received encouraging news this week! Governor Andy Beshear announced an executive action that provides additional clarity regarding qualifying medical conditions under the state's medical marijuana program. This action confirms that 21 specific conditions qualify within Kentucky's existing medical marijuana guidelines, helping patients better understand whether they may be eligible for treatment.

Why the Governor Is Clarifying the List

Governor Andy Beshear has said that Kentucky’s medical marijuana program should better reflect the real-world needs of patients living with serious and long-term medical conditions. Many Kentuckians with chronic or life-altering illnesses may not have previously qualified under the state’s narrower eligibility rules, even though medical marijuana has been shown to help manage symptoms in other states.

The goal of the executive order is to expand access in a structured and medically guided way by:

  • Allowing more patients to qualify for medical marijuana under the program

  • Reflecting patient feedback and updated medical understanding

  • Ensuring individuals with legitimate medical needs have clearer access to regulated treatment options

Rather than changing the foundation of the program, this executive order clarifies eligibility so more patients can be evaluated by a certified medical marijuana practitioner and determine whether treatment is appropriate for their condition. This can sometimes be confusing for patients, especially because Kentucky previously issued a separate executive order in 2022 related to medical marijuana access. However, the 2026 executive order is distinct and focused specifically on clarifying the current program’s qualifying conditions.

What Does This Mean for Patients?

The Governor's announcement reinforces something many healthcare practitioners and patients may not have fully realized: many of these conditions have already qualified under Kentucky's existing medical marijuana program.

Conditions highlighted in the executive action include:

  • Terminal illness

  • Sickle cell anemia

  • ALS

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • HIV/AIDS

  • Huntington’s disease

  • Muscular dystrophy

  • Wasting syndrome

  • Crohn’s disease

  • Ulcerative colitis

  • Neuropathies

  • Severe arthritis

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Glaucoma

Many patients in states where these conditions are already approved find that medical marijuana helps reduce pain, calm inflammation, ease nausea, and improve sleep. Up until now, some Kentucky patients with these kinds of conditions have still been able to qualify under broader existing categories, such as chronic pain or other related qualifying conditions.

In many cases, providers have evaluated symptoms rather than just a specific diagnosis, which has allowed some patients to access medical marijuana even before more detailed conditions were formally added to the list. Expanding the qualifying conditions simply makes this process clearer and more consistent for both patients and medical providers.

What Happens Next

The governor’s administration is reviewing medical research, patient input, and recommendations from health experts. Following the executive order, state health officials will begin updating the list of qualifying conditions.

After that:

  1. Medical marijuana practitioners will be able to certify patients under the new conditions.

  2. More patients will be able to apply for their medical marijuana card.

  3. Dispensaries will prepare to serve a wider group of patients.

How to Get a Marijuana Card in Kentucky

At Kentucky Marijuana Card, we make the process of getting approved for medical marijuana simple, supportive, and patient‑focused. As Kentucky expands its list of qualifying conditions, more patients may become eligible to participate in the program. To legally access medical marijuana in the state, a patient must have a qualifying condition listed by the program and then meet with a certified medical marijuana practitioner who can evaluate their medical history and issue a recommendation if appropriate.

Here is how the process works:

  1. Schedule an appointment with one of our certified medical marijuana practitioners.

  2. Meet with your practitioner to review your symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals. Our physicians take the time to understand your needs and answer your questions.

  3. Receive your medical certification if you qualify under Kentucky’s approved conditions and additional requirements.

  4. Complete your state application. Our team will guide you through the steps so nothing feels confusing or overwhelming. It takes the state about 30 days for the state to review and approve your application.

  5. Access dispensaries once you receive your marijuana card via email. To visit dispensaries, you must bring your active marijuana card and a government-issued ID.

We also provide ongoing support, including education on product types, dosing guidance, updates on state regulations, and help renewing your card each year. Our mission is to make medical marijuana accessible, safe, and easy to understand for every patient who needs it.

Our Commitment to Kentucky Patients

Our partnership with the Kentucky Cannabis Industry Association (KCIA) remains a vital part of our commitment to serving patients throughout the Commonwealth.

Together, we continue to offer affordable patient drives across Kentucky, bringing low-cost certification services directly to local communities. Through our patient drives, our experienced practitioners travel throughout the state, helping patients who may face transportation challenges or live far from larger cities access medical marijuana evaluations and guidance.

By meeting patients where they are, we are helping expand access to care and ensuring more Kentuckians have the opportunity to explore treatment options that may improve their quality of life.
