Kentucky’s medical marijuana program has officially reached a major milestone, and the future of patient access in the Commonwealth is looking brighter than ever. Earlier this week, Governor Andy Beshear celebrated as the state’s first legal medical marijuana plants were planted and harvested in Graves County.
The move marks the beginning of what officials call “a new chapter” for healthcare in Kentucky, as the state works toward providing safe, legal access to medical marijuana for qualifying patients.
Governor Beshear Applauds Progress
Governor Beshear called the event a “historic day” and expressed pride in how far Kentucky has come since the medical marijuana law passed last year. Speaking at a ceremony at the cultivation site in Graves County, he highlighted the significance of the moment. “This is for the people who are suffering from chronic conditions, pain, and illnesses — we promised to get this done for them, and today is proof we are delivering,” Beshear said.
The cultivation site in Graves County is currently harvesting its first batch of marijuana, and dispensaries across the state are preparing to open their doors to patients, hopefully by the fall.
What This Means for Kentucky Patients
With the first crops already underway, patients across Kentucky can look forward to having a safe, legal way to obtain medical marijuana in just a few months. The program is designed to help those living with qualifying conditions, such as:
