How Will the Senate Race Impact Medical Marijuana Laws

State Senate President, Robert Stivers, said that he may approve medical marijuana in Kentucky as long as the law is very restrictive in nature. What does he mean by this? Well, according to Stivers, the only people who deserve access to cannabis are on their deathbeds.

That’s right, Stivers said the only way he will approve a medical cannabis bill is if its only purpose is to help relieve pain for those who are at the end of their lives. However, he does not even fully believe that cannabis can relieve pain at all.

Stivers has been a huge obstacle for the medical cannabis bill in Kentucky. He does not believe that cannabis should be allowed to be smoked or vaped, stating the health risks of smoking cannabis.

Meanwhile, Governor Beshear pushes for a real medical marijuana program in the state, but unfortunately, House republicans do not agree with him regarding the many benefits of cannabis use.

Beshear is seeking re-election and will continue to push for the legalization of medical cannabis if he is re-elected. Under Beshear’s order, these are the qualifying conditions that would make a person eligible for medical cannabis:

  • Cancer

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease

  • Epilepsy

  • Intractable seizures

  • Parkinson's disease

  • Crohn's disease

  • Multiple sclerosis

  • Sickle cell anemia

  • Severe and chronic pain

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Cachexia or wasting syndrome

  • Neuropathies

  • Severe arthritis

  • Hepatitis C

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Intractable pain

  • Muscular dystrophy

  • Huntington's disease

  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)

  • Glaucoma

  • A terminal illness

If Beshear is re-elected, the odds of a real medical marijuana program being enacted are good, as he has promised to continue fighting for what is right. Only time will tell.
