In the meantime, we want to be a source of information for you. There are a lot of questions buzzing around Kentucky now that a medical marijuana program is in the near future. So are there any potential side effects that come with using medical marijuana?

Just like with any other medication, yes there are side effects. Instead of asking yourself if there are side effects, you should instead ask yourself if you can handle them better than the ones you are experiencing with traditional prescription medications.

Most of our patients answer this question with a resounded “yes”!

The Side Effects of Medical Marijuana:

Empty Stomach

Ever heard of the munchies? I am sure you have! It is one of the most well known side effects of marijuana and THC is to blame.

THC binds to receptors throughout your whole body. This means it also binds to taste and smell receptors too which makes you hungry after you use medical marijuana that is high in THC.

If you are looking to avoid getting the munchies you can try to get products that are either lower in THC or have a more balanced THC to CBD ratio. Strains with CBD will especially help because CBD is actually a partial buffer to THC so with balanced THC:CBD strains you are able to get all the benefits of THC without having to deal too much with unwanted side effects.

Dry Mouth

After medicating, one of the first things you will notice is that you are dehydrated aka you’ll have dry mouth. THC is again the menace behind this side effect but thankfully this also can be easily managed!

A simple trick you can use to help control dry mouth is to suck on hard candy or a sucker when you are medicating. This will help activate the salivary glands in your mouth so your dry mouth won’t be as extreme. Also make sure to have a big glass of water next to you too!

Red Eyes

We all know of the zombie red eyes that comes with using medical marijuana. While these are in no way harmful for the consumer, they can be a bit embarrassing as they are pretty much a dead giveaway that you have been using marijuana.

If you are someone who is trying to keep your medical marijuana use to yourself, there are some tricks you can use to not get red eyes! You can again try using CBD products, balanced THC to CBD products, or you can buy over the counter eye drops.

Takeaway About Marijuana Side Effects. . .

There are a few things that you should keep in mind when it comes to the side effects of medical marijuana.

One, remember that everyone’s body is different so everyone reacts differently to marijuana. While there are overarching effects, what one person experiences doesn’t reflect that you will experience that same thing. So if one person gets red eyes from using medical marijuana, doesn’t necessarily mean you will too.

Two, side effects often have a negative connotation to them especially when used in the medical world. But remember that one person’s side effects can be another person’s therapy. You may think that getting the munchies are a negative side effect of using marijuana because you have a healthy appetite during the day. Someone dealing with HIV/AIDS or going through chemotherapy may be using medical marijuana to actually increase their appetite.

Overall, keep in mind to be open and honest with your doctor about the side effects you are experiencing. Your doctor is there to help you! There is always a right medical marijuana product out there for everyone that will help treat your qualifying condition.
