As Kentucky's medical marijuana program continues to develop, new research into cannabis-based treatments is offering patients another reason to pay attention to the evolving field of medical cannabis.

A new clinical trial in the United States is investigating VER-01, an experimental cannabis-derived medication designed to treat chronic lower back pain. Researchers hope to determine whether this standardized cannabinoid formulation could eventually provide another treatment option for patients who have struggled to find adequate pain relief.

The medication has already produced encouraging findings in European studies, and its development represents an important step in understanding how cannabis compounds may be used in modern medicine.

For Kentucky residents interested in medical marijuana for chronic pain, the research is particularly relevant because chronic, severe, intractable, or debilitating pain is among the conditions recognized under the state's medical cannabis program.

What Is VER-01, and How Does It Work?

VER-01 is an investigational medication developed by German pharmaceutical company Vertanical.

Rather than using a conventional marijuana product, researchers are studying a standardized extract from the cannabis plant. This means the medication is manufactured with a controlled composition to help ensure consistency during clinical testing.

VER-01 contains several naturally occurring cannabinoids, including:

  • THC (tetrahydrocannabinol): The primary intoxicating compound in marijuana, which interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system and can influence pain perception.

  • CBD (cannabidiol): A non-intoxicating cannabinoid being investigated for its possible therapeutic properties.

  • CBG (cannabigerol): A lesser-studied cannabinoid that scientists are continuing to evaluate for potential medical applications.

The endocannabinoid system plays a role in several bodily functions, including pain signaling, sleep, and responses to stress.

By studying a carefully controlled combination of cannabinoids, researchers can better evaluate whether a particular formulation provides meaningful benefits.

Why Is VER-01 Being Tested in the United States?

According to an October 2026 report from NORML, researchers in western New York are studying VER-01 as a potential treatment for chronic lower back pain.

The research includes investigators at Upstate Clinical Research Associates in Williamsville, New York.

The clinical trial uses a placebo-controlled design, allowing researchers to compare outcomes between participants receiving the medication and those receiving an inactive treatment.

Researchers are examining several important questions:

  • Can VER-01 meaningfully reduce chronic lower back pain?

  • Does the medication improve sleep and daily physical functioning?

  • What side effects may occur during treatment?

  • Could this formulation eventually provide another option for certain patients with persistent pain?

The goal is to collect additional evidence about the medication's safety and effectiveness in U.S. patients.

What Have Previous Cannabis Pain Studies Found?

VER-01 has already been evaluated in European clinical trials, with results suggesting potential benefits for some patients with chronic lower back pain.

Participants receiving VER-01 experienced an average reduction of 1.9 points on an 11-point pain scale, compared with an average reduction of 1.4 points among participants receiving a placebo.

Researchers also reported improvements in certain measures of sleep, physical functioning, and quality of life.

Another study published in Pain and Therapy compared VER-01 with opioid medications in 384 adults over six months.

The researchers observed slightly greater average improvements in pain and sleep among participants receiving VER-01, as well as fewer reports of constipation.

Although these findings are encouraging, they do not establish that marijuana products in general are effective substitutes for prescription pain medications.

VER-01 is a specific investigational formulation, and additional research is needed to determine its long-term benefits and risks.

Why This Research Matters for Kentucky's Medical Marijuana Program

Kentucky's medical cannabis program began operating in 2025, creating a legal pathway for eligible residents to obtain medical marijuana through the state's regulated system.

Chronic or severe pain is one of the qualifying conditions recognized under Kentucky law.

This is especially significant for patients who have experienced persistent pain despite trying conventional treatment approaches.

As medical marijuana becomes more accessible in Kentucky, research like the VER-01 clinical trial may help patients and healthcare professionals better understand the potential applications and limitations of cannabinoid-based medicine.

However, the trial does not change Kentucky's existing eligibility requirements or establish that every cannabis product is appropriate for chronic pain.

Is VER-01 Available at Kentucky Medical Marijuana Dispensaries?

No. VER-01 is not currently available for general medical use or purchase through Kentucky medical marijuana dispensaries.

Although the medication has received Breakthrough Therapy Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it has not received FDA approval.

Breakthrough Therapy Designation is intended to facilitate the development and review of investigational medications that may offer substantial improvements over existing treatments.

It does not guarantee that a medication will be approved.

The cannabis products available through Kentucky's regulated medical marijuana program are also different from VER-01.

Dispensary products may contain varying concentrations of THC, CBD, and other compounds. Different formulations and methods of administration can produce different effects.

For this reason, patients should not assume that the results of VER-01 clinical trials apply to all medical marijuana products.

Can You Get a Kentucky Medical Marijuana Card for Chronic Pain?

Yes. Kentucky recognizes chronic, severe, intractable, or debilitating pain as a qualifying condition for medical cannabis.

Patients must meet the state's eligibility requirements and obtain a written certification from an authorized medical cannabis practitioner.

The general process includes:

  1. Confirming eligibility: Patients must have a qualifying medical condition recognized under Kentucky law.

  2. Completing a medical evaluation: An authorized practitioner must establish the required practitioner-patient relationship, including an initial in-person visit.

  3. Obtaining written certification: Eligible patients may receive certification to apply for the program.

  4. Applying for a Kentucky medical marijuana card: Patients submit their application through the state's medical cannabis registry.

  5. Receiving state approval: Once approved, patients may purchase authorized medical cannabis products from licensed dispensaries.

The state's application fee is $25, and additional practitioner evaluation fees may apply.

What Does the Future Hold for Cannabis-Based Pain Treatment?

The VER-01 trial reflects increasing scientific interest in developing standardized cannabinoid medications for specific medical conditions.

For Kentucky patients, the research offers an opportunity to learn more about the potential role of cannabis in pain management as the state's medical marijuana program continues to evolve.

Future studies may help determine whether medications like VER-01 can become approved treatment options.

For now, patients should rely on qualified medical guidance and understand the differences between experimental pharmaceutical treatments and products available through Kentucky's medical cannabis program.
