Northern Kentucky residents could soon have access to medical marijuana in Florence, as city officials move closer to approving the area’s first medical marijuana facility. With Kentucky’s medical marijuana program now fully launched, patients are already able to receive their medical card, and dispensary locations are gradually beginning to take shape across the state.
Florence Moves Forward on First Medical Marijuana Facility
At a caucus meeting earlier this month, the Florence City Council discussed a recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Committee to approve a zone map change for Bluegrass Cannacare LLC. The company hopes to open a medical marijuana facility at 6809 Burlington Pike, a .35-acre property formerly occupied by a bank across from Lee’s Chicken.
The proposed site would change its zoning from Commercial 2 to Commercial Services. In addition, the project includes an application for a conditional use permit through the Boone County Planning Commission. Officials confirmed that the proposed facility meets all of Florence’s specific requirements for marijuana dispensaries, including strict distance buffers from schools, parks, religious facilities, and other sensitive locations.
According to Todd Morgan, the Florence Director of Community Development, Bluegrass Cannacare’s site fully complies with the city’s ordinance, and all planning conditions, including added landscaping, have been incorporated into the proposal.
The Florence City Council will revisit the recommendation and vote on whether to approve the facility at an upcoming business meeting.
Security, Access, and Traffic Considerations
Planning commission members emphasized that medical marijuana facilities in Kentucky must operate under strict security and access guidelines. The proposed Florence location would be:
A locked facility accessible only to patients with a valid Kentucky medical marijuana ID card.
Limited to the same number of customers as employees inside at any time (no more than six).
Treated as a pharmacy-style business with minimal signage and discreet operations.
Patients would not be allowed to casually walk in off the street. Only individuals with active medical marijuana cards will be able to enter after passing security checks.
Business hours would be 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with no Sunday operations planned. A drive-through would be available but strictly for online order pickups, helping to minimize congestion.
Now Fully Launched
It’s important to note that Kentucky’s medical marijuana program is already live, not something launching in the future. As of January 1st, patients with qualifying conditions can legally begin the application process.
Currently, Kentucky requires in-person evaluations only, telehealth certifications are not permitted under state law.
If you or someone you know are dealing with a qualifying chronic condition and believe medical marijuana could help, don’t wait. Today, patients can schedule in-person appointments at our Louisville or Lexington offices to meet with our licensed doctors.
After receiving our doctor’s recommendation, patients submit their documentation to the state to receive their medical marijuana card. Our patient support team is available to help you with every step of the process, including the state submission.
Why You Should Get Your Medical Marijuana Card Now
Even though dispensaries are still in the process of opening, there are major benefits to getting your medical marijuana card now. Dispensaries are expected to open soon. By securing your medical card now, you’ll be ready to legally purchase products as soon as sales begin, avoiding potential backlogs or delays during the initial rollout.
Having an active Kentucky medical marijuana card also provides critical legal protection. Until dispensaries are officially open, patients without a valid medical marijuana card cannot legally possess marijuana in the state. Getting it now ensures you are fully compliant with Kentucky law and positioned to access products safely and legally.
Additionally, patients will soon have access to high-quality, state-tested marijuana products once facilities like Bluegrass Cannacare open. These products must meet strict standards for potency, purity, and safety, offering patients peace of mind about what they’re using. Many dispensaries also plan to offer exclusive discounts, loyalty programs, and other patient benefits, meaning early cardholders will be first in line to take advantage of long-term savings as the market grows.
A Patient-Focused Approach
If the Florence City Council votes to approve the Bluegrass Cannacare facility, Northern Kentucky patients will have a convenient, secure location to access their medication. The focus remains firmly on patient access and community responsibility, a welcome change that will help improve the quality of life for countless Kentuckians living with chronic conditions.
The facility’s low-traffic, pharmacy-style operation and strict security measures show that Kentucky is serious about treating medical marijuana as legitimate healthcare. And as new dispensaries come online throughout the state, patients who act early will enjoy the most seamless transition into Kentucky’s emerging medical marijuana market.
