Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear is once again voicing his support for expanded marijuana access, this time at the federal level. As national conversations heat up around marijuana rescheduling, Gov. Beshear is calling on Washington leaders to move forward and allow the U.S. Department of Justice to reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I drug to Schedule III.
In a recent letter addressed to former President Donald Trump, Beshear urged him to publicly oppose a bill in Congress that would block the Department of Justice from rescheduling marijuana. The bill is seen by many as an attempt to stall progress, even as public support for reform continues to grow.
“This is about medical freedom,” Beshear said, emphasizing the role marijuana plays in helping people manage chronic conditions and find alternatives to addictive opioids.
What Would Rescheduling Mean?
Currently, marijuana remains listed as a Schedule I drug under federal law, the same category as heroin. This classification means it’s considered to have no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse, despite decades of evidence and dozens of states running regulated medical marijuana programs.
If marijuana were moved to Schedule III, it would:
Officially recognize its medical value
Allow for expanded research
Open the door for more consistent access across states
Ease some restrictions on doctors, dispensaries, and patients
For Kentucky, the move could provide more stability and support for patients and providers alike.
Supporting Patients in Kentucky and Beyond
Governor Beshear has consistently supported marijuana reform in Kentucky, having signed the state’s medical marijuana legislation into law and pushed for early implementation steps like dispensary inspections. His latest advocacy shows that he’s not just focused on state progress; he’s working to ensure Kentuckians benefit from national policy changes too.
As the state gets closer to opening dispensaries, now is the time for patients to get prepared. By securing your medical marijuana card now, you can ensure legal access to the relief you need as soon as products become available.
