Medical Marijuana Products in Kentucky

What Products Are Approved in Kentucky?

Kentucky's medical marijuana program allows patients to use a variety of medical cannabis products:

  1. Raw Plant Material: SB 47 prohibits Kentuckians from consuming raw plant material by smoking. SB 47 also requires that all raw plant materials packaged in the Commonwealth be labeled as "not intended for consumption by smoking."

  2. Edibles: Edibles include all cannabis-infused food products that are taken orally. They generally provide 8+ hour relief with onset taking up to two hours. Due to the way these items are metabolized by the body, THC-dominant edibles can be up to four times more potent compared to flower.

  3. Tinctures: Tinctures are cannabis-infused drops that are taken sublingually, meaning under the tongue. Tinctures are ideal for a consistent, measured dose and have a quicker onset than edibles making it easier to dose appropriately.

  4. Oils: Cannabis oils are concentrated extracts typically consumed orally, mixed with food, or used sublingually. They are ideal for users looking for a potent, long-lasting effect. Oils can also be used for precise dosing, with the effects usually lasting 4-6 hours. The onset time can vary but generally occurs within 30-60 minutes.

  5. Vapes: Vapes involve inhaling vaporized cannabis oil using a vaporizer or vape pen. Vaping allows for rapid onset of effects, typically within minutes, making it ideal for quick relief. This method is often preferred by users seeking to avoid the harmful byproducts of combustion from smoking. Vaping offers a more controlled dosage compared to smoking raw plant material.
